Modelling of two step high spin⇌low spin transitions using the cluster variation method

1998

Abstract A thermodynamic description of high spin (HS)⇌low spin (LS) transition curves beyond the Bragg–Williams approximation is given using the Kikuchi cluster variation method (CVM). Transition curves of unusual behaviour (i.e. two step transition) are reproduced by short range interaction energies which are present in addition to long range elastic interaction between the spin changing molecules. The correlations in the distribution of the spin changing centers can be expressed analytically. They give rise to a reduced mixing entropy which was found experimentally in compounds with two step transitions.

Deuterium monolayers physisorbed on krypton-plated graphite: A two-dimensional Ising system

1997

Abstract Neutron-diffraction measurements were used for the first time to investigate the influence of the modification of the graphite substrate potential and of the susbrate symmetry caused by a preadsorbed layer of krypton (Kr). It will be shown that D2 on Kr/graphite presents a new 2D Ising system. The order-disorder transition of this system has been studied.

Properties of the interface in the confined Ising magnet with competing surface fields

2007

Abstract A two-dimensional magnetic Ising system confined in an L × D geometry ( L ⪡ D ) in the presence of competing magnetic fields (h) acting at opposite walls along the D -direction, exhibits an interface between domains of different orientation that run parallel to the walls. In the limit L → ∞ , this interface undergoes a wetting transition that occurs at the critical curve T w ( h ) , so that for T T w ( h ) such an interface is bound to the walls, while for T w ( h ) ⩽ T T cb the interface is freely fluctuating around the center of the film, where T cb is the bulk critical temperature. By considering both short- and long-range magnetic fields acting at the walls, we study the diverg…

Noise enhanced stability in magnetic systems

2009

In this paper noise enhanced stability in magnetic systems is studied by both an Ising-type model and a Preisach–Arrhenius model as well as a dynamic Preisach model. It is shown that in one nonequilibrium Ising system noise enhanced stability occurs and that dynamic Preisach model has the capability to predict the occurrence of noise enhanced stability in magnetic systems. On the contrary, in a Preisach–Arrhenius model of a single quadrant magnetic material, noise enhanced stability is not detected.
